It has been a while since I’ve made a free theme. I have been focusing more on the programming side of things – going deeper into the rabbit hole. Though once in a while I still get that urge to design and be creative. This time around – I give you Squid Work. A dark and serious theme for the dark and serious bloggers. Okay – I was kidding about the dark bloggers…

View the Demo

The Homepage

Squid Work’s homepage sports a beautiful slider of your latest posts. Code credits go to Nivo Slider for the awesome transition effects of the images. Right below the slider are 6 additional thumbnails of your selected posts.

How to select a category for the slider and posts underneath it:

You can specify a post category for the slider as well as the 6 thumbnails right below it. All you need to do is open feature.php in the editor section in the admin panel (go to “Appearance” -> “editor”, and select “feature.php” in the right hand column). Once you have “feature.php” in editor – look for this code: “$cat_for_slideshow = ”” enter the category slug inside the quotes. Do the same for the posts underneath – but look for “$cat_for_six_boxes = ”” instead.

The Sidebar

Squid Work’s sidebar floats in the middle of the viewport – thanks to the jQuery plugin: stickyFloat. Note that if your sidebar is longer than the viewport – it won’t float as expected. I added a custom flickr photo feed – thanks to code by Barattalo. This feed can be configured by adding your own flickr group id inside functions.php. Lastly, the sidebar supports widgets. Widgets will show up right above the Flickr feed.

Everything Else

Notice the beautiful bokeh photography by gemedj89 of Photodune. The container of the site is a combination of CSS 3 and textured repeating patterns. Fonts are supplied by Google Web Fonts and finally – all code is XHTML valid. How about that!

So what are you waiting for! Grab Squid Work and use for your WordPress blog.

WordPress is one of the most popular blog platforms on the market today. Many bloggers use it because it free, easy to use, and offers endless options to customize and optimize the experience of website visitors. Since the platform is so popular, it is expected that hackers would also be interested in it as well.

This is a guest post from Karen Max. Read more about Karen at the bottom of this article.

Unfortunately, WordPress is not immune to hacking or security breaches. In actuality, it has become more common in recent years. WordPress is not bad in and of itself and all software, programs, platforms, and etc. are prone to some security issues when people misuse and abuse technology to harm people.

In general, WordPress is an excellent blog platform that offers many advantages and it is relatively safe and stable most of the time. Read on to find out more about WordPress Security:

Why WordPress Security Fails:

When a WordPress website gets hacked or has a security breach of some sort, the user may get redirected to another website or find that the site has vanished. Security breaches and hacking incidents could have happened in any number of ways. The security breach could have been introduced by the user’s computer if there is some type of spyware or malware in the system. Sometimes entire web hosts may be hit by a security breach that causes all of their websites to be affected. A hacker may have obtained the password and login information somehow or they may have actually hacked into the users website from a remote location. Regardless of how it happened, there are certain precautions and steps to take when there has been any kind of security breach.

What To Do When WordPress Security Fails:

If there has been a confirmed hacking attempt or security breach on WordPress, here are some steps to take:

Backup the website and files

Even if it may contain some malicious code, it is still important to have a copy of what the website used to be. The code can be cleaned up later, but having an original copy of the site is essential to restoring the website later.

Install the latest version of WordPress

Install the latest version of WordPress, but do not use the automatic installation option because it only updates certain files. Do a complete re-installation of the latest version of WordPress as well as themes and plugins needed.

Change the Password

This should be a no brainer. Create a new STRONG password for the administrator account. It is also assumed that the admin account is not named “admin” or “wp-admin”.

Delete the Old Directory

Since you already have a copy of the website, delete entire old directory to remove all of the malicious code.

Scan Computer for Viruses

Use antivirus software to scan the computer for any malware or viruses that may be present on the system just in case.

WordPress and Spam

Spam is very prevalent on all blogs and WordPress is no exception. Spam is mostly annoying and it usually does not disrupt the website or cause a hacking attack, but sometimes it can be serious. All spam comments can be deleted without any special plugins or software. Here are some plugins that can help elminate spam comments:

Akismet

Akismet is a plugin that requires a registration key from their website. A website for personal use can obtain a registration key for free, but an e commerce site must buy one. It screens out all of the spam comments before they are posted automatically.

reCAPTCHA

This is type of security used on many websites to prevent spambots from logging on. It shows some garbled text and asks visitors to decipher the text to post the comment.

Simple Trackback Validation

This plugin will check the IP address of the commenter and see where the comment is pointing back to. This usually eliminates over 90% of spam.

How To Strengthen WordPress Security

WordPress is still a secure platform for the most part, but there are some ways to improve the security of the website. Here are some tips to strengthen the security of WordPress:

Upgrade WordPress Frequently

Upgrade WordPress frequently when there is a notice of a new version available. These already contain some security updates.

Backup System Regularly

Backup all of the WordPress files periodically just in case something happens.

Change Passwords Regularly

Passwords should be changed periodically to prevent hackers from getting them.

Install Security Plugins

WordPress offers a number of security plugins that can help prevent some of these incidents in the first place.

Best WordPress Security Plugins

WordPress offers a number of free plugins for users to install to increase the security of the website. Here are some good plugins to prevent security breaches.

Antivirus

This plugin will help detect and remove viruses and malware from the website.

WordPress Firewall

This plugin prevents some malicious activity from reaching the website.

WordPress File Monitor

This plugin notifies the owner of any changes to the code on the WordPress site. The user will be aware when a hacker tries to alter the files.

Conclusion:

Overall, WordPress is one of the best blog platforms and millions of people continue to use it everyday without any problems. Like all software, it has some vulnerabilities and some people have been able to hack into the system. WordPress is already secure, but it is best to back up files, upgrade the latest versions, and install some additional security plugins. Hope that you learned a few tips from this article and take a few steps forward in securing your site.

A couple of years back I designed a theme that was centered around a business website. A theme that has a featured slider in the homepage, nice sharp edges, subtle backgrounds and slight gradients. It was called Eureka.

Buy Through Paypal

The theme went for sale in Themeforest – and it did pretty well the first several months – but finally reached its non selling point. Today I’m selling this theme for a measly $10 (the .psd files are FREE and is a separate download). For this low price – its practically free! Read on to see why its a good deal:

homepage of eureka

Theme Features:

At first look, you will fall in love with Eureka’s balanced design. A solid black header with just enough room for your logo and page navigation. The large feature slider will sure get your message out: loud and clear. The sharp containers that house the posts and sidebars are classic and well crafted. You will notice the comments area, social buttons, icons and footer – all complete the design as part of the whole. Your visitors will love your website – and for that, will want your business. Give Eureka a try.

You can buy Eureka theme from this link, and grab the PSD files to edit the content slider, logo etc. The READ ME files is inside the theme folder, or download it from this link.

All in all, I think this theme is quite remarkable. Yup, a pat in the back – a job well done. Agency is what I call it. It is a magazine style theme that puts your content in a beautiful wrapper, complete with subtle page elements that is sure to add elegance to your pages. This theme is compatible with the latest WordPress release, taking advantage of some its newer features. Let me explain:

Agency has been updated to Version 2. More details can be found in this post

Features:

A Custom Slideshow – sits in the home page, automatically switches through four images. These images are post thumbnails from posts assigned to a specific category. In other words, the slideshow pulls 4 posts from a category named “featured”. You can change the category by editing “feature.php” – look for the variable $myCat .

Two Widgetized Sidebars – Each sidebar has a width of 140 pixels – just enough to house small ad spots, text and general widgets .The sidebars also sit on the center of the page as you scroll down.

Custom Gallery Styles with Lightbox – The default WordPress gallery style is overridden to match the rest of the theme. Lightbox effect is also applied to all links leading to an image.

Built in Contact Form – no need to install a plugin for a simple contact form, its already in the theme. Simply apply the page template “Contact Form” into your page

The theme also supports the WP 3.0 menu system, gravatars and threaded comments. The thumbnails for each posts, including the images in the slideshow are pulled from the post thumbnails.

How to Use:

Installing the theme is just like any other WordPress theme. Simply go to the “Appearance” > “Install Themes” section in your admin panel. Click the “Upload” link – browse to the theme .zip file and “Install Now“.

Adding Post Thumbnails to your Posts:

To add images to your posts you can use the Post Thumbnail feature of WordPress. Simply go to the post in “Edit” mode. On the right side of the page – click on “Set Featured Image“:

This will trigger the image uploader. Upload your image and as soon as that’s done, click the “Use as Featured Image” link:

Note that you should keep the file sizes to a smaller size. The resizing script has a maximum size limit.

How to Activate the Slideshow:

The slideshow in the homepage pulls 4 posts from a category called “featured” (If you want to pull from a different category – see below). Simply go to “Categories” and one called “featured” – add 4 posts under it.

Visit your homepage and you should now see the slideshow area populated with the posts you just assigned to “Featured”. Now if you don’t see an image – that means you haven’t assigned a Post Thumbnail – so read the section above called “Adding Post Thumbnails to your Posts“.

*If you want to change the slideshow to pull from another category instead of “featured”, go to “Appearance” > “Editor” and click “feature.php” from the right side. In the editor – change the word “featured” into your category slug that you want (see below). Save your changes.

How to insert a Photo Gallery:

Adding a photo gallery into agency is as easy as pie. Simply go to the post / page you want in “Edit” mode and click on the image uploader. Navigate to your local directory and highlight the images you want and click “Open”.

As soon as the images upload, click on “Save Changes” and additional settings will show. Select your options and click “Insert Gallery”.

Update your post / page and preview it. You should see your gallery in place. The lightbox effect should also automatically pick up. All images that are linked to another image will trigger the lightbox effect in the Agency theme.

How to Customize the Navigation Menu:

Agency supports the WP Menu System which let’s you customize the links any way you want. Go to “Appearance” > “Menus” and start by creating a new menu. Enter a menu name and click “Create“.

This will create a blank menu panel in the right side of the page. The idea is to select categories, pages or custom links from the left side, click the “Add to Menu” button – and it will appear on the menu panel in the right. In this panel, you can drag and drop the links so you can design the menu hierarchy. Links that are staggered underneath become the drop down links from the respective parent – you get the drift.

Credits:

The contact form code came from Trevor Davis – which works like a charm. The lightbox effect for the images are from No Margin for Errors. The Javascript for the floating sidebar is from a plugin called “stickyfloat“. Finally, the awesome model photos from the demo site are from my friend Jigs Tambong.

Conclusion:

Agency is ideal for high content blogs with multiple post categories. Some HTML and CSS knowledge is required to customize, as well as Photoshop for the graphic elements. On the same note, my recent theme “Lucky Guess” is now FREE!.
You can purchase Agency from this link.

Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day – I give you Lucky Guess. Lucky Guess is a semi-magazine / semi-personal blog styled theme for WordPress. It packs a set of nifty features that you will find useful, especially for newer blogs. Don’t let this baby fool you – it may not be real fancy, but it will surely dress up your blog! And it loads hella fast – the theme files are minuscule in bytes! <del datetime="2011-05-16T19:54:08+00:00">You can have Lucky Guess for a ridiculous price of $5 (just enough for coffee and donuts)!</del>

Lucky Guess Theme is now FREE! Click here to download. Don’t forget to follow me in Twitter, or in Facebook.

View Demo

Features

The theme supports WordPress 3.0 featues such as post thumbnails, wp-menu system as well as widgets. A custom jQuery Tabbed Container is embedded in the sidebar. This showcases your posts which is randomly ordered, as well as post tags in the second tab. Custom styling for your photo galleries, with a built in lightbox functionality known as “Prettyphoto” – courtesy of No Margin for Errors. So all of the images linked to another image will pickup this plugin by default.

I’ve implemented plenty of CSS 3 techniques in this theme. You will notice both loud and subtle text shadows in the headings, text orientation and box gradients. I’ve used plenty of Google fonts – which renders faster than the popular Cufon. The theme is tested to work in IE 7, 8, Safari, Chrome and of course Firefox.

Conclusion

So what now? If you run a WordPress blog and need a real make over – this might be the theme for you. Install this puppy and you’re ready to go. I’ve mentioned that this theme is ideal for new blogs – only because its easier to attach post thumbnails as you create new posts. Although Lucky Guess will still work with or without thumbnails. So what do you say? Leave them in the comments section below.

Aparatus has been my most popular freebie since I’ve started this blog. It’s complimented many WordPress sites and I’m very happy to have created it. This time around I’ve decided to upgrade this old puppy and refresh its’ looks just a tad bit. Aparatus version 2 is now available for download – for a low fee of $10.

Buy Through Paypal

Update – there has been a security vulnerability in an image handling script in this theme. Please update to the new Timthumb. Read more details here.

So what has Changed?

As you see from the demo, I’ve tried to preserve Aparatus’ original design. The few things that I changed is more for performance rather than visual. I went ahead and removed the Tweetmeme buttons in the archive pages – which greatly improved page loads. There was a horizontal scroll bar bug in the old version – which is now fixed.

The theme still utilizes Cufon – but only for select areas of the theme such as the Logo and the footer. The logo now has an etched and gradient look – which is a big enhancement. I also added some Google fonts – to the post and comments headings. A few CSS 3 code is also used to improve the presentation of the text a little bit more.

A new post thumbnail handling code is used. Both feature images and custom fields still work, it just handles the resizing better. The feature image also appears in the single post page – this is something many users have requested for.

The theme now supports the new WordPress menu system. You can now customize the menu according to your craziest “navi-wishes”.

Lastly, a smarter theme options is integrated. If you don’t enter a Twitter account – no button or feed will show in the theme. The same goes for the large ad button.

How to Use the Slideshow:

The slideshow automatically pulls your most recent posts (5 maximum). You can change this to pull from a specific category by going to “Appearance” > “Aparatus Options” and putting the category slug in the field: “Category Name for the Content Slider“. You can also take out the slideshow or choose to not automatically slide – by checking the appropriate boxes in the theme options.

Also, if you see the slider with the “Oops…Looks like” message (shown below) – that means you haven’t assigned a post thumbnail to your post. Read the section above called “Adding Post Thumbnails to your Posts“.

How to insert a Photo Gallery:

Adding a photo gallery into Aparatus is as easy as pie. Simply go to the post / page you want in “Edit” mode and click on the image uploader. Navigate to your local directory and highlight the images you want and click “Open“.

As soon as the images upload, click on “Save Changes” and additional settings will show. Select your options and click “Insert Gallery“.

Update your post / page and preview it. You should see your gallery in place.

How to Customize the Navigation Menu:

Go to “Appearance” > “Menus” and start by creating a new menu. Enter a menu name and click “Create“.

This will create a blank menu panel in the right side of the page. The idea is to select categories, pages or custom links from the left side, click the “Add to Menu” button – and it will appear on the menu panel in the right. In this panel, you can drag and drop the links so you can design the menu hierarchy. Links that are staggered underneath become the drop down links from the respective parent – you get the drift.

Once the menu is done – hit “Save Menu” and in the top most left column box called “Theme Locations“, select the menu you just created from the drop down called “Header Menu”. Click “Save” and view your website. You menu should now be in place.

Switching Stylesheets

Aparatus comes with 4 different color styles – also known as stylesheets. Go to “Appearance” > “Aparatus Options” and in the top most section is a drop down called “Style Sheet”. Select Maroon, Black, Blue or Green and “Save Changes“.

Adding the Twitter Badge and Latest Tweet:

Still in the theme options, right underneath the Style Sheet drop down, is the Twitter account field. Enter your Twitter user name in this field.

Save your changes and view your website. You should see a nice Twitter Badge in the Header – and your latest Tweet in the sidebar area.

Advertising Blocks:

You can ad advertising blocks in the sidebar area right in the theme options. You can do 1 large 300 x 250, and 4 small 125 x 125 squares. Go to the theme options page – and see the “Advertising Blocks” area. Enter the image source of the ad (where the image is coming from), and the destination (where the link goes when the image is clicked).

Save your changes and view your site. You should see the ad blocks in the sidebar nicely lined up:

Frequently Asked Questions:

I’ve gathered a several most asked questions in regards to Aparatus. Read below to see if your question is one of them.

Modify the Twitter Badge Image

Many want to modify the large Twitter Badge in the header. Please note that the font I’ve used in this badge is called – League Gothic, and you need to download that in your Fonts folder to twiddle the .psd file.

Slideshow is not showing images

If you’re using custom fields – make sure you have GD library installed. You also have to make sure that the cache folder inside scripts (themes/aparatus/scripts/cache) is fully writeable. In addition, you need to enter at least a couple of posts to kick start the slideshow.

How To make posts in the slideshow appear below the slideshow

By default posts inside the slideshow does not duplicate underneath – where the rest of the post are. Many like it this way – but some have asked how to make them show below as well. To do this look for this line of code inside gallery.php and delete it:

$saved_ids[] = get_the_ID();

How to fill the Author Box Information

The “About the Author” box right in the single posts page grabs information from your profile. Go to “Users” > “Your Profile”, under Biographical Info – enter your stuff there.

The Header Text takes too long to convert into the logo

Sometimes Cufon takes a bit of time to do its thing. Aparatus uses this to use your site name and automatically convert it into a decent looking logo. But sometimes – due to client browser constraints, it performs poorly.

For this issue it would probably best to use an image for your logo. If you really like how it looks with Cufon – just take a screenshot and convert the image into a jpeg and replace it inside the header.php.

Conclusion:

Enough of the FAQ! Download already! I hope you enjoy this theme as much I’ve seen it in many blogs.

I decided to go unconventional on this free theme. It’s called “Maximum“. It spans the full width of the browser – something you don’t see very often. It also loads fast, due to the limited use of images. I feel the WordPress users might look for a theme that’s different, one that’s pretty and one that’s fast. Please check out the demo for Maximum:

View Demo

You can download Maximum theme files from this link, and if you haven’t already done so – please donate via Paypal.

The Holy Grail

So I thought it was easy to have three columns, with both sidebars static widths; while the center column is the only one that expands according to the browser. Boy I was wrong – I couldn’t figure it out for the life of me! And through some serious searching I finally discovered “the Holy Grail” – from A List Apart. The funny thing is – I’m probably one of the last ones to find this “sacred” code. Thanks to Matthew Levine’s article – I achieved my layout.

Breadcrumbs, Buttons and CSS3

I started to implement my own breadcrumb function – but discovered Dimox’s solution – was far more complete. I needed a breadcrumb navigation that doesn’t require a plugin and Dimox did the job very well. Zurb’s Super Awesome buttons are what’s styling all the buttons in Maximus. You should notice the resemblance for each button – with only the base color that is different from one another.

Lastly, I’ve adopted quite a few CSS3 techniques from all over the net. From box shadows, text shadows and overlays – all contribute to the visual effects of Maximum.

Conclusion

You can download Maximum theme files from this link, and if you haven’t already done so – please donate via Paypal.

I hope you find good use for Maximum. I did enjoy experimenting and discovering new ways of doing things. I imagine this type of theme would suit the serious content writers (ones who need all the real estate they can get). It may also be used for ecommerce, or “wiki” types of layouts – who knows. If you do decide to use it, don’t forget to leave your url in the comments section below! Happy Blogging!

Oh I spend too much time in front of my pc – my wife always say. This time around – I sat, designed and coded a straight how many hours and am glad to produce: Rotary. Rotary is a two column theme with tons of features including a kicker home page. It is built to be used with WordPress 3.0, and is centered around the idea of running your blog as a CMS. Let me explain:

View the Demo

Buy in Paypal

Below is a screenshot of Rotary’s glorious homepage. The roundabout carousel sits right on the fold – with images that are pulled straight from your post thumbnails. Click to view the Rotary Demo page:

Custom Post Type

You like that carousel / slider in the home page? Well that is due to the amazing code known as the roundabout by Fred LeBlanc. You can easily change the contents of this carousel in two ways:

1) Using a custom post type

In the left hand side of the admin area you will notice a section called “Roundabouts”. Simply add a new roundabout and give it a title, some content and attach a “feature image”.

The images are automatically resized to the right dimensions. Also – you’re only allowed up to 5 roundabouts.

2) Change the static code

If you decide you don’t want to use the custom post type feature – you can simply change the HTML. Inside home.php you will see an unordered list with each item as follows:

1

<li><a href="#"><img src="<?php bloginfo('template_directory'); ?>/images/586x360.jpg" alt="Need Image Here" /></a><div class="hiddendesc">Need to Enter Image</div></li>

Simply replace the values of your images, title and link and you’re set to go.

The Navigation Menu

This by far is my favorite 3.0 feature – custom menus. It’s simply amazing. I’ve added the code to Rotary that lets you design the main navigation of the theme.

Simply drag and drop items to the menu builder and save.

Feature Images

Just like the roundabout items – all posts in this theme can have its own feature image. Simply use the “Set feature Image” option for each post:

This image will show as thumbnails in the archive pages, and a medium photo inside the single page template:

Conclusion

Truly by using the features above – you can utilize the power of WordPress 3.0 as well as turn your blog into a cool CMS. Give Rotary a spin – it’s cool, it works and it’s only $10! Please leave your questions and comments below.

One of my favorite ways to stay up to date on the latest design trends is to browse Themeforest. Themeforest has hundreds of the finest web and graphic designers trying to sell their work. It is no surprise that it is here that you will see new styles and craze to ever hit the world of web design. Below is a list of styles (along with some examples) that I have been noticing in new templates from Themeforest:

Note – in case you’re wondering, yes – the links to the items below are affiliate links. But this doesn’t mean that I’m just trying to make a buck – these templates are truly awesome.

Bokeh and Blurry Backgrounds

I first saw this style from this popular Tumblr theme. Bokeh is an effect where a colorful palette of round reflections are so washed and blurred from an out of focus lens of some sort. This mystique of photography somehow brings the subject (the content in our case) a much more focused and sharper look. The Bokeh effect gives the entire page an overall feeling of harmony and beauty.

Blur

Bokeh in combination with transparencies as well as rounded corners give this template a thumbs up from me!

You can view the Item here, or <a href="http://enstyled.com/blur/index.html "target="_blank">Demo from Here

Modern Business 3

This template uses bokeh in the inner frames of the page. Very sleek, professional and elegant.

You can view the Item here, or <a href="http://www.theaterwebsiteservices.com/themeforest/modern_business3_dark/index.html "target="_blank">Demo from Here

Dark ‘n Clean

Another Bokeh Beauty, don’t miss the amazing typography from this theme!

You can view the Item here, or <a href="http://www.furtzdesigns.com/darknclean/ "target="_blank">Demo from Here

Overlapping Folds

This style has been around for a while, but still doesn’t fail to amaze me. It is when the designer takes page elements and wraps them among sections of the page, as if it was three dimensional.

Unite

Definitely one of my favorites. Exceptionaly detailed – the folds even change in orientation when scrolling up and down

You can view the Item here, or <a href="http://para.llel.us/themes/unite-wp/ "target="_blank">Demo from Here

Stage

This one is very unorthodox. Folds, peels – 3d everywhere!

You can view the Item here, or <a href="http://idesi9n.com/stage/ "target="_blank">Demo from Here

Fancy Folio

More in the safe and conservative style, checkout the folded navigation button

You can view the Item here, or <a href="http://theme-planet.com/fancyfolio/ "target="_blank">Demo from Here

Wild Slideshow Transitions

May it be Flash or Javascript – I’ve noticed a trend in transitions. The “fade” and the “sweep” no longer suffice, check out the slideshows in the templates below for a better demonstration.

Perception

Sliced, reversed, waves – the slideshow on Perception will leave you breathless.

You can view the Item here, or <a href="http://pexeto.com/perception_wp/ "target="_blank">Demo from Here

CleanCut

The transition effects on CleanCut will give your images that “Wow” factor.

You can view the Item here, or <a href="http://www.kriesi.at/themes/cleancut/ "target="_blank">Demo from Here

Infinite xHTML/CSS Theme

The slideshow on this template is a combination of many styles, played in random order. Tastefully done.

You can view the Item here, or <a href="http://www.grupolasalida.com/themeforest/infinite/light/ "target="_blank">Demo from Here

Accordions

Instead of the regular slideshow, some templates integrate an Accordion effect (or both) right in the home page. Both are somewhat similar, though the Accordion is a new trend that gives your website that out of the ordinary style.

Innovation + Science

Definitely of of my favorites – Innovation + Science is very sleek, sharp and clean. The accordion is a good choice for this template.

You can view the Item here, or <a href="http://warp.nazwa.pl/dc/innovation/index.html "target="_blank">Demo from Here

Newscast

Again, one of my favorites – this template’s got it all: typography, spacing, color, javascript effects – and of course the accordion. Probably the best magazine styled theme I’ve ever seen.

You can view the Item here, or <a href="http://www.kriesi.at/demos/newscast/ "target="_blank">Demo from Here

Echoes

Awesome, awesome, awesome!!! This template simply echoes “awesome!”

You can view the Item here, or <a href="http://echoes.imaginemthemes.com/wp/ "target="_blank">Demo from Here

Minimalist

Just as the title describes, minimalist styled websites try to achieve the best look out of the least styling. The aim of the minimalist is to present beauty out of pure simplicity.

Europa

Big solid fonts, grayscale schema, massive spacing – this template speaks simple yet beauty.

You can view the Item here, or <a href="http://alaja.info/europa/wordpress/ "target="_blank">Demo from Here

Squared3

Squared3 has good typography, as well as excellent color scheme.

You can view the Item here, or <a href="http://www.practicefieldadv.com/wp/squared3/ "target="_blank">Demo from Here

Minimalistic Studio

This template should also have been in the “Wild Slideshow Transitions” category, again – a nice solid template with simple accents and design applications yet effective results.

Ever wonder how to convert your WordPress blog into a more automated posting process? One that can accept guest posts, job listings or even a forum-type of blog? Where users can submit a post, save it into your drafts section and all you have to do is approve or deny? The beauty of the open source community is that someone, somewhere had already thought about doing this, and have already developed a solution. With a combination of several plugins and some custom styling, here is how I was able to automate the guest post submission process here in my blog:

First thing you have to do is check the “Anyone can Register” option under “Settings” > “General”. Don’t forget to leave the “New User Default Role” as “Subscriber”.

Lock Down the Registration Process

Now that you have your site open for registration, it is best that you install these plugins first to enable tighter security:

Secure WP – as many options that this plugin comes with to enhance security, what I especially need it for is to disable the error messages at login (which this plugin does very well)

SABRE – stands for “Simple Anti Bot Registration Engine”. This produces that image during registration to block “autobots”

Limit Login Attempts – the plugin title says it all. Activate this plugin and tweak depending how tight you want login attempts. Note that you’re not going to see any error messages due to the Secure WP plugin

Hide the WP Admin Panel

So registration is open, security is tight – you still don’t want users to see your WordPress admin area. Not that there’s anything wrong with that – but it just looks more sophisticated when all is done in the front end. Install the following plugins:

Theme My Login – this plugin will generate a page called “Login” – this is where your new login forms (includes new registration and forgot password) will sit. Additional options also include custom emails, redirection and moderation. *Make sure you check “Enable Template Tag” under “Optimization” – You’ll need this in your theme later

Theme My Profile – plugin created by the same author, which ports the users “profile” page into the front end. Make sure you theme and block admin area ONLY for roles you want.

The following screenshots show the login page, as well as the profile page generated by the plugins that I’ve mentioned:

TDO Mini Forms

We’ve come to the meat of the project. This is the plugin that does all the magic. TDO Mini Forms allows users (registered on not registered) to submit and edit posts to your blog. It comes with its form creator that lets you design the post submission form any way you want. Widgets that let you drag and drop components into your form, as well as a form “hacker” that allows even deeper code tweaking. What I especially liked is that it hooks up with your “Akismet” for spam protection.

After specifying all the configuration settings with TDO, go ahead and create a form with “Form Creator”. The form creator is a somewhat decent drag and drop interface where you grab the widgets in the bottom and drag it to the form. Widget settings are applied by clicking on the settings tab and it brings up the settings window as shown below:

Once you’ve decided on the fields and the settings, you can now alter the code to change the verbiage, along with adding HTML elements in order to be able to style it in your stylesheet. Below shows my contribute form:

Maybe some Custom Code

Depending on your pages – you might need to add some PHP conditional tags and functions to the theme manually. This is to link the new pages to each other. Simply copy your theme’s page.php file and rename it to something.php – convert it into a template by adding the code on top of the page:

1
2
3
4
5

<?php
/*
Template Name: something
*/
?>

Now below the call for the content, add the conditional tag with from the Theme My Login plugin:

1
2
3

<?php if ( is_user_logged_in() ) {?>
<div >I bet you would like to submit a Guest Post. Click <a href="yourwebsite.com/conribute">here</a> to access the contribute form. </div>
<?php } ?>

The screenshot below shows the custom link to the contribute form that we just created:

All you have to do now is to wait for guest post submissions and depending on the content – simply approve, edit or deny. The submissions are saved as draft posts and are in the moderation view of TDO mini forms:

Conclusion

Now that you have converted your blog into a more automated (and sophisticated) posting process – think of all the possible scenarios you can create. Of course I’m completely aware that my guest posts will not land any successful submissions any time soon – it’s just good to know that it’s available. Not to mention, it was fun to make.

Let’s not forget to donate to the plugin authors!
